Stone Carving is a subtractive sculpting process, the material is removed from the whole. Typically beginning with a block (marble, alabaster, limestone, granite) the sculptor sketches on the stone and cuts the larger areas away. (1)
Once the rough cuts are complete the sculptor begins a long process of chiseling, grinding and sanding. (2 & 3) Texture is achieved by the process of chiseling or smoothed by sanding.
Once the sculptor is content with the surface and form of the stone the sculpture is complete. (4)
