Last year’s show received such fantastic response, we’re doing it again. Please join us at the 2nd Annual Painter’s Challenge at Columbine Gallery this winter. The Challenge is a theme-based painting exhibit by represented artists of Columbine Gallery. Providing ten (10) words to artists at the beginning of the year, the only parameters were the themes and scale (under 10 inches); the rest left to the individual artist for interpretation. The artists had the option of painting all the themes, some of the themes, one theme several times over, or none at all. The resulting artwork will be featured in a salon-style hanging at Columbine Gallery November thru December.

Exhibiting Artists: Ren Burke (Fort Collins, CO), Cathy Goodale (Estes Park, CO), Lu Haskew (Loveland, CO), Brenda Hart [Boulder, CO]; Pat Howard (Durango, CO); Zach Howard (Santa Ana, CA); Alyson Kinkade (Loveland, CO), Susan Simon (Evergreen, CO); Russ Tanner (Loveland, CO), Teresa Vito (Pueblo, CO),

“The Painter’s Challenge developed from a method I’ve use in my own studio – developing a painting from a word, (something outside of my norm). Because sometimes we just need that extra nudge to get out of a creative rut, gravitate toward a new perspective or to simply do something different. Last year I shared this concept with my fellow artists at Columbine Gallery out of curiosity of what would happen if other artists took on the challenge. We had such a great response and received over 175 paintings to hang. It proved to be a fun departure and made what is normally a very solitary art practice into a chance to work together and communicate more. The interpretations were so distinct, and so telling of each artist and their current journey. This year I came up with a new list of 10 words and shared them with the artists in January so that they could fully develop their concepts. We made the scale of work small so that the artists didn't feel over-committed and to keep things simple. Several of these little paintings have already directed the artists into a new place in their other artworks. The diversity in interpretation is quite fascinating and we think you'll enjoy the results.” -curator, Alyson Kinkade
